All-time favorite lyricist, MC and poet: Lauryn Hill.

I chose a road of passion and pain
Sacrificed too much and waited in vain
Gave up my power ceased being queen
Addicted to love like the drug of a fiend

Is it me or does Lauryn kill it every single time? I mean she just says it exactly how it is. This is a great song for someone who survived after a toxic relationship or marriage. Love is a drug and an addiction and so often it  gets the best of us to a point where we don’t even realize that we have the power to get out of it and that we deserve the best. This song is empowering because it reflects that she’s at a place where she finally values her own worth and clearly sees that she deserves better. Most of all, she takes full responsibility for pain she inflicted on herself and I really respect that.

So I was flipping through the radio stations the other day and was happy to come across this new hott song! I turned it up and immediately got really into it. The lyrics were a little wild but I was still feelin’ it. I couldn’t figure out who it was for the life of me – it was killin’ me!  Last time I heard a really good song like this one the radio, it was Miguel Jontel’s “All I want is you”. This song has a similar feel to it: a nice smooth r&b flavor with a legit beat. I hadn’t heard of Def Jam’s singer & songwriter, Frank Ocean, ever before. Looks like he has written many songs for various artists in the r&b world. I’m really feelin’ his style and loving his music! Looking forward to learning all about him and exploring his music further but for now, I stayyys addicted (no pun intended).
